Provision is one of the oldest functional definitions of masculinity, and its meaning has expanded rather than contracted with time. The historical version — the provision of food, shelter, and physical safety — has become in the modern context the provision of capacity: financial capacity, emotional capacity, decisional capacity, and stable presence, for the people whose lives are, in some meaningful sense, tied to yours.
